Trooper Gabriel Rich and Trooper Scott Johnson Memorial Park
The City of North Pole is now accepting applications for individuals to be memorialized at the Trooper Gabe Rich and Trooper Scott Johnson Memorial Park

Click here for guidelines and application.

The City of North Pole has dedicated the Trooper Gabe Rich and Trooper Scott Johnson Memorial Park. The park will honor Borough residents that lost their lives while performing their official duties serving their country, state, or municipality. The dedication took place on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 2870 Doughchee Avenue in North Pole, the site of the new park.

The City of North Pole initiated the effort to create the memorial park after the murder of Troopers Rich and Johnson. Trooper Rich was formerly a North Pole police officer. The effort grew to recognize Borough residents employed in the public sector that lost their life while serving their country, state, or municipality. The effort also expanded to be a partnership with the City of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska Police Officer Association, Interior Fire Chiefs Association, United States Armed Services and community groups. The Memorial Park committee is working with Design Alaska Inc. to design the park.

For additional information, contact Police Chief Steve Dutra at 488-6902 or sdutra@northpolepolice.org.

Beaver Springs Nature and Multi-Use Trail
np_beaver_springs_slough_trail_head_4090Beaver Springs Trail is a 0.8 mile nature trail the winds through the center of the City. The trail head to the nature trail is adjacent to the City of North Pole City Hall located at 125 Snowman Lane. Parking is available at City Hall. The trail head at the opposite end of the trail is located within the 5th Avenue Park located on 5th Avenue located at the intersection for 5th Avenue and Davis Road. Parking is available at the 5th Avenue Park.  During the winter, the trail is cleared and available for non-motorized use (walking/cross-country ski/bicycling).

The trail provides a patch of undeveloped land of towering black spruce, paper birch and forest undergrowth. Beaver Springs Creek has a thriving beaver and muskrat population, small mammals, water fowl, and perching birds. Moose frequent the trail and lynx have been observed in the area. Interpretive signage is located along the length of the trail. The local elementary school uses the trail for natural history lessons. The City’s Public Works Department maintains the trail year round including collecting litter, with the help of a local 4-H club and Fairbanks North Star Borough; clears brush that falls on the trail; and conducts routine maintenance. The trail provides a pedestrian shortcut across town, so the Public Works Department also clears the trail of snow in the winter. The Beaver Springs Trail is incorporated as the first leg of the 1st Sergeant Thomas Uptgraft Senior Community Fitness Trail. Follow the slide show to see some of the highlights you may see along the nature trail tucked in the center of North Pole.
